The Four Elements of Transformational Leadership. The modern idea of Transformational Leadership is based around 4 elements described by Bernard A. Bass in 1985: Idealised Influence, Intellectual Stimulation, Individualised Consideration and Inspirational Motivation. The transactional and transformational theories of leadership developed by Burns (1978) and Bass (1985) are clarified and extended by using a constructive/developmental theory to explain how critical personality differences in leaders lead to either transactional or transformational leadership styles. The distinction between two levels of transactional leadership is expanded, and a three-stage developmental model of leadership is proposed. Con” rmed by Bass (1985). Their results led these authors to recommend collaps-ing some of the original leadership factors into higher order factors such as transformational leadership. The current study tests the six-factor model proposed by Bass (1985), using a larger and more heterogeneous sample than included in prior research. Bass also provides an important Leadership Questionnaire for measuring both transactional and transformational traits - a tool that is sure to become heavily used for individual self-appraisal and personnel evaluations in a variety of organizations. And he presents numerous examples of real-life transformationalists, including Thomas J. Bass defined transformational leadership in terms of how the leader affects followers, who are intended to trust, admire and respect the transformational leader. He identified three ways in which leaders transform followers.
