- Click the Hyphenation button. Automatic hyphenation lets Word choose how to hyphenate words, while Manual will open a dialog box and work through the document to let you choose how to split each word. Select a hyphenation option.
- Microsoft Word has three (3) options available for hyphenation: None; Automatic or Manual. By selecting None you turn this function off within your document and if a word does not fit onto a line in its entirety then it will be moved to the next line. By selecting Automatic you are asking Word to identify and insert hyphenation without your input.
To enable the automatic hyphenation, follow these steps:
1. Make sure that no text is selected. Otherwise,Word applies hyphenation settings only to the selected fragment.

The Hyphenation dialog box gives you more control over hyphenation inWord:
- For automatic hyphenation select the Automatically hyphenate documentcheckbox.
- If you do not want to hyphenate words in uppercase letters, leave theHyphenate Words in CAPS checkbox blank.
- Set the length of the Hyphenation zone.
This value is the distancein inches between the end of the last complete word in a line of text and themargin - in other words, the degree of raggedness Word should allow. Word usesthis measure to determine if a word should be hyphenated. Large valuesdecrease the number of hyphens; smaller values increase the number of hyphensbut reduce the raggedness of the right margin.Note: The Hyphenation Zone option is disabled for documentssaved in the .docx format because the hyphenation feature has changedstaring from Word 2013. To use the Hyphenation Zone option,save the document in .doc format. - If you don't want consecutive lines to have hyphens - it can make a documentlook a little strange, and you will need to rewrite some parts of it -set a limit in the Limit consecutive hyphens to box.
